Puerto Viejo

Puerto Viejo is an reggae inspired, little backpacker village at the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica - famous for it's surfing, rainforest national parks and white-sand paradise beaches!

You'll feel and absorb the laidback vipe, attitude and the eccentric culture as soon as you arrive. Bob Marley music, surfboards, swings instead of bar chairs, flipflops and a gentle smell of marihuana wherever your go. The village’s cultural influences are itself really interesting: a mix of Afro-Caribbean, Bribri, Indian, Tico and hippyesque counterculture. I can assure you that this small port town is an anthropological study in itself. Besides observing the culture and soaking up the sun at the most stunning paradise beaches I've ever seen (which we had all to yourself by the way - felt a bit like Leonardo DiCaprio in "The Beach") we spent our time surfing, hiking in Cahuita National park, volunteering at the Jaguar Rescue Center, drinking cocktails with the locals and trying to absorb and take it all in. We mixed it all up with a little luxury at the beautiful Shawhanda Lodge Hotel - which I would highly recommend at any time.

Note: The howler monkeys, frogs and all kind of exotic insects will make sure that you don't need an alarm clock! Remember to bring your earplugs.

Remember to check out my other blogposts from Costa Rica (including an entire post about our visit at the Jaguar Rescue Center).
