Isla Del Coco (Shark Island)

About 550 km. from the shore of Costa Rica, only accessible by a 34 hours adventurous boat ride, you’ll find an once-in-a-lifetime scuba diving adventure that leaves you craving for lush greenery, fresh air, salty hair and mind-blowing scenery!
The wild, beautiful and uninhabited paradise island is like a scene straight out of ”Jurassic Park” or ”The Beach”: We was greeted by a large herd of dolphins, steep rainforest cliff walls, caves, hundreds of spectacular waterfalls, blue lagoons, palm trees and unreal, paradise beaches.

But what truly touched my heart was the spectacular and irreplaceable moments we spend beneath the surface, when we jumped into the ocean – to spend about 3 hours of nitrox a day. Besides enjoying every minute of the crystalclear, blue water, colourful coral reefs, exotic fish’ and under water caves – we uncounted hundreds of majestic hammerheads, tiger sharks, galapagos sharks, dolphins, giant turtles, stingrays, eaglerays and all kind of beautiful underwater creatures.

Sadly Cocos Island is really beset by illegal shark poachers, that the island rangers confiscate tons of illegal fishing gear each year. A couple of years ago they decided to make a statement, and build an entire bridge out of nothing but the confiscated fishing gear – as a symbol of better times for the island. As they said “we took something awful and turned it into something beautiful”. Breaks my heart, but makes it smile at the same time.

When we wasn’t diving, we went ashore to hike, go waterfall hunting, cool down in the blue lagoons and drink fresh coconuts on the beach. When the sun went down, and we couldn’t tell where the heaven stopped and the ocean began, we would just spend our time learning about each other, our different countries, life stories and different cultures. Sometimes we talked for hours and laughed ourselves to tears and sometimes we was just sitting there, on the sundeck, speechless, side by side – taking it all in.

Life is all about exploring the moments that matter.. The moments that no one can take away from you. That will stay with you forever. To me, this entire adventure at Cocos Island was one of those moments
