”Wake up” someone whispered as they turned on the light. Confused and sleepy I looked around, and it took me a while to realize where I was. It was freezing and everything around me was made of shining, beautiful ice, including the bed I slept on.
”The sky is clear for Northern Lights” the voice from before continued, and suddenly someone stood beside us with a cup of hot cranberry juice. I was fully awake now, and so was my boyfriend beside me. This was it!!! The moment we had been longing for since we got to Lapland.
We jumped into our ICEHOTEL winter suits and within a few minutes we were sitting on a dog sled cuddling up in reindeer skins and each other’s arms. The huskies in front of us were eagerly barking, ready to do what they loved the most and ready to bring us far away from the city’s extraneous light.
After 30 minutes of dog sledding we ended up in a deserted forest, and our guide effortless kindled a fire to make us hot chocolate and coffee while we waited. But we didn’t have to wait long before the starry sky turned into surreal green and pink dancing colors. This moment was something I had always dreamt of, but only vaguely imagined experiencing. Never had I ever been so amazed, and never had I ever been feeling this grateful. For hours we just stood there without saying a word, hand in hand, taking it all in! This moment no one could take away from us, and I was sure that it would stay with us forever.
Overwhelmed I asked the guide about what causes this dazzling natural phenomenon. He just smiled and said: “I would love to tell you, but honestly? In a world like this, we could all need a little magic.”
